What to Do If You Think You're Experiencing a Dental Emergency

February 21, 2025

Dental emergencies can happen at any time, and knowing how to react can make all the difference in saving a tooth, preventing infection, or reducing pain. Whether it's a sudden toothache, a knocked-out tooth, or a broken crown, taking quick action is crucial.

What Qualifies as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental issue requires immediate attention, but certain situations should never be ignored. Here are some common dental emergencies and what to do if they happen to you:

1. Severe Toothache

A toothache that won’t go away, especially if accompanied by swelling or fever, could be a sign of infection or an abscess. Rinse your mouth with warm water, floss gently to remove any trapped food, and take over-the-counter pain relievers. Avoid putting aspirin directly on your gums, as this can cause burns. Call your dentist immediately to schedule an appointment.

2. Knocked-Out Tooth

If a permanent tooth gets knocked out, time is critical. Pick up the tooth by the crown (avoid touching the root), rinse it gently with water, and try to place it back in its socket. If that's not possible, keep it in a cup of milk or saliva to keep it moist. See a dentist within 30-60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.

3. Cracked or Broken Tooth

If you crack or break a tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Avoid chewing on the affected side and see your dentist as soon as possible. A small crack may be repairable with bonding, while a deeper break may require a crown or root canal.

4. Lost Filling or Crown

If a filling or crown falls out, keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side. You can temporarily place a piece of sugar-free gum or dental cement (available at most pharmacies) over the exposed area. Schedule a dental appointment as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

5. Abscess or Swelling

A swollen face, gum boil, or persistent bad taste in your mouth could indicate an abscess or serious infection. This requires immediate dental care, as infections can spread quickly to other parts of your body. Call your dentist or visit an emergency room if you experience difficulty breathing or swallowing.
