Learn How to Properly Care for Your Dentures

If you wear removable dentures or partials, properly caring for them is a must. Not only does proper care ensure your dentures look their best, but it also keeps them clean, promoting better oral health.

Luckily, caring for dentures isn’t difficult. If you don’t know where to begin, here is an overview of what you need to do.

Remove and Rinse After Eating

After each meal, take a moment to rinse your dentures. Simply remove them and place them under running water, allowing food debris and other loose particles to rinse away.

If you aren’t in a position to remove them for rinsing, such as after eating at a restaurant, use some water and do a quick swish, just as you would with mouthwash. This can help remove debris in a pinch, though isn’t as effective as a removal and rinse.

Brush Your Dentures Daily

Even though dentures are manufactured, that doesn’t mean you don’t need to brush them. Like natural teeth, debris and bacteria can build up on the surface, and brushing helps remove these particles while also keeping your dentures fresh.

Remove your dentures and use a soft-bristled brush and a gentle, nonabrasive toothpaste or denture cleanser. If you use adhesive to keep your dentures in place, clean out all of the grooves and make sure all of the adhesive is removed.

Soak Dentures Overnight

Since most dentures need to stay moist to maintain their shape, soaking your dentures overnight not only helps preserve them but also keeps them clean. Use a mild denture-soaking solution and follow the directions regarding the amount of water.

In the morning, make sure to rinse or brush your dentures thoroughly before putting them back in your mouth. Many of the chemicals used in the soaks aren’t designed for human consumption, so you want to make sure they are completely gone before you put your dentures back in.

Visit Your Dallas Dentist Regularly

When you visit your Dallas dentist, you not only get to have your dentures professionally cleaned, but you can also address any fit issues that may be causing slippage or discomfort. A poor fit can cause irritation and sores, and may even lead to an infection.

Additionally, the dentist can make sure that your mouth stays healthy, something that is critical even if you do wear dentures.
